The Broward State Attorney's Office filed the charge Friday. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Merling was arrested May 27 in Weston. When the Broward Sheriff's Office arrested him, they noted that he either knew or should have known the woman was pregnant.
If convicted, the 25-year-old could face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
The NFL also could punish Merling for violating the league's personal-conduct policy.
A telephone message left with Merling's attorney, who has filed a plea of not guilty, was not immediately returned.
The process starts when we [me & you] have to look up his number to learn the name. I'm doing it in training camp when he flashes at me a few time. You do it in the exhibition or regular season for the same reasons. Eventually we start to expect that number will continue to get called on, or out for positive things.
These somebodies might not shine like a big time star, but they do establish themselves as difference makers.
Greg Camarillo not only saved the Miami Dolphins from the shame of going 0-16 courtesy of his overtime touchdown catch against Baltimore, providing Cam Cameron his one and only NFL win as a head coach, but he also emerged as a two-year starter thereafter.
The next season two undrafted rookies - receiver
Davone Bess and kicker Dan Carpenter made the nation take notice in their first season. And a scrappy Patrick Cobbs established himself as an offensive spark plug and special team's staple, becoming the head coaches favorite player.
Last year defensive end Randy Starks transformed himself from career backup to NFL stud, and offensive lineman Nate Garner and tailback Lex Hilliard got the call up from the practice squad and become significant contributors every Sunday.
If this trend continues one or more obscure players on the 2010 Dolphins' roster will be presented a chance to carve out a respectable career by making the most of his opportunities. But who will it be?
Here is my list of the top five players who could potentially step their games up big time in 2010. The Dolphins need some of them to do just that.
The Brandon Marshall and LeBron James additions made big splashes. It will certainly help both franchises when it comes to jersey sales.
Another similarity, albeit not a good one, is that they are in need of defensive pillars. The Heat have not appeared to add a player to contain elite big men such as Dwight Howard. While the Dolphins just lost veteran nose tackle Jason Ferguson after his recent retirement.
As it stands both franchises seem prepared to go in to the season with the
Jake Long rosters they have. Whether they will be able to solve the problems with players already in the fold remains to be seen.
The Heat are going to be counting on strength in numbers. It is quite likely that Miami will enter the season with six players capable of playing center. Zydraunas Ilgasukas, Joel Anthony, Dexter Pittman, Jamal Magloire, Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem are the current options.
The problem with the status quo is that they all have weaknesses in their game. Big Z is 7'3" which would be great if it was Zydraunas circa 2002. At the moment Ilgauskas is a quality mid range shooter who doesn't bring much to the table on the defensive end.
Anthony and Haslem would both be perfect centers. They are hard workers, solid defenders and give great effort on the court. Unfortunately they're both undersized for the position.
Bosh is something of an enigma. He has good length but Howard out weighs him by 35-pounds. He has also stated he'd prefer to not play center. Bosh also has never been known as a great defensive player.
Magloire would have been a good option but his game has slipped.
Chad Pennington During the past two seasons the "Big Cat" has been used sparingly by Miami's coaching staff. He is a good emergency player but not the answer for a starting center. His role on the team will be to serve as James and Wade's enforcer more than anything.
This leads to the most intriguing candidate, Pittman. He has an ideal frame for the position. He is a massive individual best capable of pushing people around in the paint. Problem with Pittman is that he is a rookie. It would take an impressive training camp performance by Pittman to be thrown in to the rotation at the start of the season.
Dolphins
The
new Miami Dolphins jerseys were expecting to be without Ferguson for the first eight games of the 2010-2011 NFL season. What they were not prepared for was that he would not be coming as the cavalry come week 9.
Mike Nolan who is entering his first season as the Dolphins defensive coordinator, will have to move some parts around in order to fill the void.
Randy Starks was already expecting to move to nose tackle. Question is can he help stop the run considering his size? For his part, Starks who excelled at the defensive end spot said he welcomed the move.
Jared Odrick is a high motor rookie that was drafted by Miami in the first round of this years draft. The former Penn State stud is expected to come in and contribute at both defensive end and tackle.
Paul Soliai is probably the best suited player to take over for Odrick. The problem with Paul is that his play has been sub par up to this point of his career. Soliai will be entering his fourth season in the league. Dolphin fans better hope he is ready to make the leap from a decent sub in to a solid starter.
